Business

It is the most popular major in the country and it is not one major. Business splits into finance, marketing, accounting and more, and which of those you pick is worth about eighteen thousand dollars a year.

Try the career before you pick the major

Four years is a long time to find out. Spend five minutes running a business first.

Where it leads

Selling, marketing, accounting, running things day to day, and starting something. The widest spread of any major here: of 100 graduates with work a year later, 24 are accountants or marketers and another 19 are salespeople.

The week

Around 15 hours of class a week, plus 30 or more hours of cases, spreadsheets and group projects. A big share of your grade rides on people you did not pick.

Where people end up

Out of every 100 business graduates in work a year later, this is what they were doing.

  • Accountant or marketer24%
  • Salesperson19%
  • Manager12%
  • Software engineer or IT support6%
  • Teacher3%

The other 36 of those 100 landed outside all five of these names. The people who do best out of this major usually picked something specific inside it early and got good at that, instead of staying general for four years.

What a week is like

You take four to six classes at once, which comes out to about 15 credit hours a semester. It is that same load every semester for four years: 120 credits, eight semesters, done.

About 15 of those hours are spent sitting in class. The other 30 are work you do on your own, two hours behind every hour you spend in a room. Call it 45 hours a week.

It is spread across seven days rather than stacked into five, so you can keep your evenings or you can keep your weekends, not usually both. What it does not leave is much slack in the weeks when two big things land on the same day.

A waking week is about 112 hours. This is the share of it the degree takes.

  • In class15 hours
  • Work on your own30 hours
  • Yours67 hours

What those 45 hours are spent on.

  • with other people

Half of it is someone explaining an idea and half is the room arguing about it. In business a lot of class time is the arguing, and you are expected to talk.

  • on your own

One or two a week. A case is a write up of something that really happened at a real company, fourteen pages of it, and you read it to work out what they should have done.

  • with other peoplethe hard part

The biggest block of the week, and the hard part is not the work. More of your grade rides on people you did not pick than in almost any other major, and the projects never stop.

  • on your own

The numbers behind whatever the group is about to argue. Accounting and statistics are most of this in the first two years.

  • with other people

Standing up and defending the answer, most weeks. It is a graded skill here rather than a thing that happens occasionally.

  • Business classes33%
  • Math and stats19%
  • Everything else you still have to take48%
  • Classes you pick yourself0%

A third of your first year is business, and almost none of that third is the part you pictured. You pick none of it yourself in year one.

How much do you make?

Business is not one major and the money proves it. Four years out, what you earn depends on which of the six degrees below you picked.

  1. Right out of college

    $55,000

One year after finishing, the average business administration graduate earns $55,000, and that is graduates at work, not back in school.

  2. Midway through

    $82,000

Between 35 and 45, the average business administration graduate earns $82,000.

  3. At the height of it

    $154,000

In business and finance work, the top tenth of earners are on $154,000.

Here is the part nobody says out loud. Business administration, the general one almost everybody signs up for, is second from the bottom of that list at $68,257, and more students finish it than any other degree in the country. The most popular door is not the best paid door, and the gap is about eighteen thousand dollars a year.

That gap does not close as people get older, it widens. By 35 to 45 the finance and analytics graduates are at $109,000 and up, against $82,000 for business administration. Eighteen thousand has become twenty seven thousand, and the choice that opens it gets made inside the major.

Business is one major with six degrees inside it, and this is what each one pays four years after people finish. Analytics is the statistics and spreadsheets one, administration is the general one that touches all the others, and human resources is the people side: hiring, pay and looking after staff.

  • Business analytics$86,176
  • Finance$83,343
  • Accounting$76,194
  • Marketing$69,303
  • Business administration$68,257
  • Human resources$68,069

The one most students pick is the second lowest paid on the list.

Is this you?

Business is broad on purpose, and the first half of it is numbers and rules rather than ideas. So the real question is not whether you like business. It is whether you are fine spending two years on accounting and statistics to find out which part of it you want.

Questions people ask

Is business management the same as business administration?
Yes. It is the same degree under a different name, built on the same core classes. Roughly half of its graduates land in work a degree was never required for.
Is a business major worth it?
It depends which one. Business analytics pays about $86,176 four years after graduating and human resources pays $68,069. Picking inside the major matters more than picking the major.
What is the highest paying business major?
Business analytics, at $86,176 four years after graduating, then finance at $83,343 and accounting at $76,194.
What can you do with a business degree?
The spread is the widest of any major here. Of 100 graduates with work a year later, 24 are accountants or marketers, 19 are salespeople and 12 are managers. The other 45 are spread across everything else, from computers to teaching to work that fits none of the usual names.
How many hours a week is a business degree?
Around 45 hours a week: about 15 sitting in class and 30 or more on your own. Yours go on reading cases, building spreadsheets and group projects.
Do you need an MBA?
Not to start, and most people never get one. Of business graduates aged 35 to 45, about 25 in every 100 hold a graduate degree of any kind, a master's or a PhD, and an MBA is only part of that 25. Across all majors it is 39 in 100.
Is business a hard major?
The first two years of accounting and statistics are the hard part for most people. What comes after is more reading and arguing than calculating.
