Teach Someone What to Do, and Check They Got It

Maps to: Registered Nurse · Nurse Practitioner · Physician · Paramedic · Health Teacher · Physical Therapist

Teach a real person what to do in one emergency, like a nurse teaching a family.

Somebody near you should know what to do in one emergency, like spotting a stroke. On this card you teach them on one page, then check they can say it back without the page.

How this shows up on a resume or college app

I taught who what to do if the emergency, using the trusted source. I cut it to the three things they most needed and one page they could follow while scared. When I took the page away and asked them to tell me what they would do, they what they got wrong. I changed what I changed because why, taught it again, and on the second try they the result. I learned that telling somebody something is not the same as them knowing it, and the only way to find out is to ask them to say it back.

When you finish you have the thing itself, plus a Common App activity description Sidequest drafts from what you actually built.

The plan

  1. 1

    Step 1

Pick who you teach, and write down the three things they must know

Pick one real person and one emergency they should know how to handle. Then write down the three things they most need to know about it.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Make one page your person could follow while they are scared

Turn your three things into one page somebody could follow in the worst minute of their week. Put the thing they do first at the top, in words they use, and cut everything else.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Teach the person you picked, then have them say it back from memory

Sit with your person for ten minutes and teach them the page. Then take the page away and ask them to tell you what they would do. Write down exactly what they say, especially the parts they get wrong.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Fix what they got wrong, check again, and hand over the page

Fix the parts of your page they got wrong, then check again that they can say it back.
