Ship Your First Web App

Maps to: Software Engineer · Product Manager · Founder · Designer

You're going to build a real web app. That means a small program that opens inside a web browser, like Chrome or Safari, the same way a website does. You'll build it for one thing you personally wish existed, and put it on the internet so other people can open it too. The hard part is picking the ONE job your app should do well, and leaving everything else out. Then you fix what breaks the first time a real person tries it. That is what people who build software for a living actually do all day: turn an idea into a working thing, and decide what not to build. You'll finish with a link you can send to anyone, and they can open it right away.

You're done when: A link a stranger can open and actually use, you can name the ONE job it does and who it's for, and you fixed at least one thing after watching a real person use it. The judgment is the work: not 'it went online,' but 'I cut it down to the one thing it does well, and a real person used it.'

How this shows up on a resume or college app

I built a working web app for user persona and put it online, taking it from a vague idea to a link real people use, then cutting it to the one job it does well after watching them. I learned that the hard part of building software is the judgment: deciding what to build and what to leave out.

When you finish you have the thing itself, plus a Common App activity description Sidequest drafts from what you actually built.

The plan

  1. 1

    Step 1

Pick the one thing it does, and who it's for

Pick the one thing you personally wish existed, and name the one person it's for (it can be you). Write it as one sentence, then open a tool like Lovable and start building the real thing.

  2. 2

    Steps 2-4

Build it, then put it on the internet so people can open it

Now you build: describe your app to Lovable or Bolt, tools that turn your words into a working app, and they write it for you. Once it does the main thing, put it online, even if it still looks a little rough.

  3. 3

    Step 5

Use it for real, then keep the one thing it does best

Use your own app for a real task, and notice what's broken, confusing, or useless. Then pick the ONE job it must do well, remove everything else, and fix that one job.

  4. 4

    Step 6

Share it with 3 people, then fix the one thing that tripped them up

Send your link to 3 real people and watch (or ask) where they get stuck. Pick the one fix that matters most and make it. Then it's real: a thing you made, online, that people used.
